No matter how much you love your day-to-day life, there comes a time when you’ve just GOT to get away: when one more second of hearing the keys clicking on your keyboard has you almost bolting away from your desk, when one more phone call makes you want to pull out your hair, when one more temper tantrum at the grocery store leaves you ready to call a babysitter for the night (or two or three). When you feel this itch creeping up, it should be a sign… Take a deep breath, and start planning a long weekend trip.
We know you’re busy. We know there are thousands of destination cities lurking in your dreams. It’s hard to find time to do vacation research and make a decision. That’s why we’re here to help, and we’ve narrowed down our weekend trip suggestions to four fantastic choices.
Believe us, whichever trip you choose for your next long-weekend trip, you won’t regret your decision.
New Orleans, Louisiana
Soulful notes of blues and jazz float on the air throughout the French Quarter in New Orleans. Also in the mix: the aroma of signature dishes along with the personality of the city itself makes the Crescent City a hopping place to take a weekend vacation.
Start your trip by booking a room at the Melrose Mansion or The Chateau Hotel. Both have an old-world Victorian feel to get you in the French-Cajun mood. You’ll want to stroll through the historic French Quarter, the music-laden Frenchmen Street, and the historic Garden District—and maybe even book a swamp tour to get up close and personal with alligators.
You won’t have any trouble finding a place to eat, but Felix’s Restaurant and Oyster Bar and Café Degas are both popular and authentic. No trip to New Orleans would be complete without picking up a fresh, warm beignet, so make sure it’s on the to-do list.
Another dream weekend destination is Music City, USA. Dance your way through the Country Music Hall of Fame and the Grand Ole Opry, or any of the countless live music venues, where you can immerse yourself in your favorite sounds of rock, country, and blues.
Book your stay at the Aloft Nashville West End with its loft-inspired design. It’s a hip place to call your home-away-from-home, located in the musical heart of Nashville. TThe Kimpton Aertson Hotel’s chic industrial design and walls full of commissioned artwork is in one of Nashville’s hyper-local neighborhoods and is another dreamy choice.
What you may not know is that Nashville offers even more than strumming guitars. It’s home to the Parthenon, a complete replica of the original Greek structure. When you visit it, you’ll see why Nashville is called “The Athens of the South.”
Browse the boutique shops in East Nashville or the 12 South Neighborhood. For tastes of a different kind, fill your plate with southern comfort food classics like barbecue and Nashville Hot Chicken from incredible restaurants throughout the city. If you’re up for a short drive, taste the famous Tennessee whiskey straight from the source at the neighboring Jack Daniels’ Distillery, located 1.5 hours south of downtown Nashville. Once you experience this lively capital city, you’ll see why it’s become such a popular destination for weekend getaways.
Lake Geneva, Wisconsin
If you prefer a more scenic destination rather than a bustling city, the lakeside playground of the rich and famous from the neighboring big cities, Lake Geneva, is perfect for a romantic weekend getaway. Only an hour and a half drive along I-94 from Chicago, or less than an hour from Milwaukee on I-43, Lake Geneva is full of Victorian-era architecture and gardens.
The Holiday Inn Club Vacations at the Lake Geneva Resort is a swanky condo-style home base from which to begin your explorations of the area. Or, the Comfort Inn Suites is close to all the attractions in this historic town.
Start your vacation with a latte from Avant Bicycle and Café, a local spot where tuning bikes go hand in hand with caffeine. Next, browse the unique shops, take in a round at one of the many golf courses, or walk the lakeshore to see the opulent multi-million-dollar mansions, beautiful wooden boats (some valued at more than $400,000!), beautifully manicured gardens, and designer boathouses.
To experience the lake more intimately, book a fun adventure with the Lake Geneva Cruise Line for a Geneva Geo Challenge that leads to docking points around the lake, or fly through the air with the Lake Geneva Canopy Tour, open year-round. Don’t let the famous Wisconsin winters keep you away. Lake Geneva is just as much fun in the winter, with ice fishing and winter festivals, as it is in the summer.
Did you know: 75% of the nation’s hops and apples are grown in the Yakima Valley region? It’s no surprise then that Yakima is a great weekend getaway for beer lovers, foodies, and outdoor enthusiasts alike. And as the wine industry has matured over the past few years, Yakima has also become a hidden gem for wine lovers, too.
Because of the valley’s location, Yakima boasts 300 days of sunshine every year, making it an ideal destination for mountain biking, hiking, golfing, and skiing. When you finish your outdoor adventures, jump on one of the historic trolleys that connect Yakima and Selah and learn about the vibrant history of the region with a visit to the city museum.
The Ledgestone Hotel in downtown Yakima or the Fairfield Inn and Suites are centrally located and make it easy to explore this area. Located about 60 miles east of Mount Rainer, Yakima is a little more than two hours from the Seattle-Tacoma International Airport. If the drive down doesn’t interest you, you can jump on one of the few daily flights from Seattle to the Yakima Air Terminal located on the southern edge of the city.
